Abul Kalam Azad (1888-1958), an educator, religious scholar and freedom fighter, passed away at the age of 69 on February 22, 1958. He is remembered for his many contributions to the Indian independence movement. Born to a Persian language scholar in Mecca, Azad was proficient not only in his native language, but also in Arabic, Urdu, and English. He was associated with the Indian National Congress since pre-partition days and worked as a freedom fighter, publisher and ultimately the first education minister of independent India. Known for his constant efforts to unite all Indians, Azad aimed to increase religious harmony and promote communal understanding. His most notable works include India Wins Freedom, Ghubar-e-Khatir, and Tarjuman-al-Quran. Azad is remembered for his tireless efforts to free India from colonial forces, his promotion of religious understanding throughout India, and his prolific writing. He left behind a legacy of knowledge, understanding, and a lasting tribute to the struggle of India’s freedom.
