The life of Al Davis, an influential professional football figure and owner of the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders, has come to an end on October 8, 2011. He passed away peacefully at the age of 82. Al Davis was born in 1929 in Brockton, MA. After graduating from Syracuse University, he began working for the NFL as a coach and coach-scout in 1950. He soon rose to the position of Head Coach and General Manager of the Oakland Raiders in 1963, making him the youngest general manager in professional football history. In 1972, he was appointed commissioner of the American Football League, becoming the first commissioner of the league when it merged with the National Football league in 1966. He served in this capacity until 1976. In 1972, he purchased a majority stake in the Oakland Raiders, becoming principal owner and CEO of the franchise. In 1982, citing Los Angeles' offer of a much desired domed stadium, he moved the team to Los Angeles. The Raiders again returned to Oakland in 1995. Al Davis was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. He also received numerous honors, including the AFL Chairman Award, NFL Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award, andAnna M. Bixby Memorial Award. Al Davis was and continues to be highly respected and remembered among football circles both nationally and internationally. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
