Alberto Giacometti, Swiss artist and sculptor, died on January 12, 1966, at the age of 64. Giacometti was best known for his surrealist works, which focused on the transience of existence and used his own unique style of elongated and emaciated figures. Giacometti achieved prominence in the twentieth century with his works featured in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. He also won multiple awards for his sculptures, including the Venice Biennale Sculpture Grand Prize in 1954 and the Carnegie Prize in 1961. Giacometti is remembered as a pioneering modernist artist whose works left an indelible mark on the art world. He will live on in his incomparable artwork and surrealistic legacy.
