It is with deep sadness that the family of Sam Cooke announces his passing on December 11, 1964, at the age of 33. Sam Cooke was an American soul singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. As one of the most influential popular music performers of the 20th century, he left a legacy that continues to inspire. He began his career in 1950 when he joined The Soul Stirrers, a gospel group, and later transitioned into secular music, becoming one of the most successful and well-known African-American singers of that era. He released many hit singles such as "You Send Me," "A Change Is Gonna Come," and "Cupid." Cooke was also responsible for establishing his own music publishing and record label companies to protect copyright ownership rights for himself and other black musicians. The inspirational artist died suddenly in December 1964; his death was met with public shock and sadness as he had a strong cultural impact on the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Sam Cooke will be remembered dearly by friends and family for his tremendous voice, talent, and leadership in the industry.
Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough. William Saroyan
