Alfred Dreyfus, a French military officer and a victim of one of the most well-known miscarriages of justice in French history, died on July 12, 1935, at the age of 75. Alfred was born in Mulhouse, Alsace-Lorraine, one of nine siblings. He was a student of the École Polytechnique in Paris and entered the French Army as a major in 1885, rising to Commandant in 1896. In 1894, Alfred became the focus of the Dreyfus Affair when he was unjustly accused of spying for Germany. He was convicted, stripped of his military rank and sentenced to life in prison on Devil’s Island in French Guiana. After increasing doubt over the evidence and numerous appeals, the injustice of the case became widely publicized resulting in Alfred’s eventual pardon in 1906. His Army rank was restored and Alfred resumed his life as a military officer, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1913. Alfred was later awarded the Legion of Honor, France’s highest order of merit, in 1914. Alfred Dreyfus died peacefully in his home in Paris in 1935.
