Dr. Amar Gopal Bose (November 2, 1929 – July 12, 2013), founder of the Bose Corporation, passed away at his home on July 12, 2013, at the age of 83. He was a renowned professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was internationally recognized as an innovative and revolutionary engineer and entrepreneur. Amar was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Noni Gopal Bose and Charlotte. He received a Ph.D. from MIT under the guidance of the renowned physicist Norbert Wiener, and held over 50 patents related to acoustic engineering, and televisions and radios. At MIT, Amar worked on the radios used on military bombers and was part of a team that developed and tested the first transatlantic microwave relay. He founded the Bose Corporation in 1964 and went on to develop a number of revolutionary products in the fields of noise-canceling headphones, car audio systems, and home theater systems. Amar received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Technology in 1994, the National Medal of Science in 2003, the John Fritz Medal in 2005, and MIT's highest honor, the John Price Wetherill Medal, in 2010. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2008. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and four grandchildren.
