Andres Bonifacio, Filipino patriot and leader of the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish, died on May 10, 1897, at the age of 33. He was born in Tondo, Manila in 1863, and was a self-educated man who worked as a warehouse tenant, vendor and clerk. Despite his humble beginnings, he rose to lead a revolution against the colonial oppressors. He was a founding member of the Katipunan, a secret society which sought equality and independence for the Filipino people, and led the revolt which resulted in the Philippine Declaration of Independence. Andres Bonifacio is considered one of the most important Philippine national heroes, pioneering revolutionary thought and action. He will be remembered for his immense courage and for putting his convictions into action on behalf of the Filipino people. He will be long remembered for his hard work, bravery and patriotism.
