Winnie Madikalizela-Mandela, a beloved South African activist and politician, passed away on April 2nd, 2018 at the age of 81. She will be remembered for her passionate fight against apartheid and her lifelong dedication to the cause of social justice in her home country. During her years of activism, Madikalizela-Mandela was admired for her bravery, tenacity and unwavering spirit. She was active in the African National Congress, the South African anti-apartheid movement and advocated strongly for women and children’s rights. In the early 1990s, she served as a Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology in the first post-apartheid government. Later, she served as a Member of Parliament from 1994-2003, and was also a Member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC. Madikalizela-Mandela was a Nobel Peace Prize nominee and is remembered for her selfless dedication to her country. She is survived by her two daughters, Zenani and Zindzi, and her grandchildren. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of activists, both inside and outside of South Africa.
