Louis Althusser, one of the most influential Marxist philosophers of the twentieth century, passed away on October 22, 1990, at the age of 72. A native of Algeria, Althusser was primarily educated in France, where he completed a dissertation on the concept of ideology in 1948. After receiving his degree in philosophy from the University of Paris, Althusser began teaching at the renowned École Normale Supérieure in Paris, and soon published a wide range of influential works, including the well-known Lenin and Philosophy and Other Essays in 1970. Louis Althusser was known for bringing a structural approach to Marxist thought, and his innovative theories had a major impact on the entire field of Marxist philosophy. He was also a champion of humanism and anti-capitalism. He will be remembered by scholars and students alike as a brilliant philosopher, teacher, and advocate for social and economic equality. He leaves behind a remarkable body of work which has influenced generations of thinkers.
