On November 17, 1992, the world lost Audre Lorde - a renowned poet, writer, civil rights activist, and teacher - after a long battle with cancer. She was 58 years old. Audre Lorde was born in 1934 in New York City to parents of Grenadine and Caribbean decent. A voracious reader, she wrote her first poem at the age of twelve and later went on to earn a bachelor's degree in library science and a master's degree in library service. Lorde was a fiercely independent and passionate feminist, exploring the personal and political implications of social identity. In her works, she explored and advocated for issues such as civil rights, the LGBT community, and women's issues. In describing her role and identity, she famously said "I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” Inspired by her work, she is well-remembered and honored for her commitment to civil rights and regarded as a touchstone for future generations of minority women. Her legacy will live on.
