Beloved teacher and pioneer of modern yoga, B. K. S. Iyengar passed away at the age of 95 on August 20, 2014. Through his hard work and commitment, he revolutionized yoga as we know it, bringing it to a global audience. Born in 1918 in Bellur, India, Iyengar began his yogic journey as a child. Despite a life plagued by illness, he was determined to teach and share the psychological and physical benefits of yoga with the world. His expertise on the subject eventually earned him awards and recognition from the Indian government, and he was granted the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 1991. Iyengar was widely known for his method of yoga which emphasized alignment, rhythmic breathing, and precision. It was more commonly referred to as “Iyengar” yoga, one of the most popular styles of yoga today. He had a deep understanding of the body-mind, and wrote over 14 books and countless articles on yoga, all while cultivating yoga centers of his own. His impact on the health and wellness industry is immense, and his teachings will continue to inspire yogis around the world. He had a profound influence on millions of lives and his legacy will live on forever.
