Today, the world mourns the loss of Bernard Mannes Baruch, a successful businessman, wise statesman, and influential analyst. At the age of 94, Bernard died peacefully on June 20, 1965. Bernard was born in Camden, South Carolina in 1870 to a Jewish family. He attended the City College of New York for a short period before working on Wall Street in his early twenties and eventually founding an investment banking firm. His business success earned him the trust and respect of prominent political figures. At the request of President Wilson, he served as an executive on the War Industries Board and as a Chairman for the Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense during World War I. Following the war, he went on to serve as an adviser to multiple Presidents and acted as a representative for foreign nations. He held an important role in negotiations between Germany and the US following World War II, and authored the "Baruch Plan" to establish international control of atomic energy. He continued to consult for the United States government until his death. In his last years, he established the Baruch Foundation to “enhance the well-being of mankind” and donated to charitable causes in the US and overseas. His family, admirers, and numerous friends will remember Bernard as a gentleman of extraordinary ability and integrity who shaped the world into a better place.
