Bernie Casey, a legendary actor and athlete, passed away on September 19, 2017, at age 78. Born in 1939 in Wyco, West Virginia, Bernie was an All-American football player in college at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. His athletic career was followed by an acclaimed career in the arts in which he earned international acclaim as a renowned actor, painter, and poet. His film career included an impressive array of performances in classic movies, most notably, as "Gibbs" in Revenge of the Nerds, and in Spike Lee's Clockers. He even had memorable TV roles on CBS's In the Heat of the Night and ABC'sAmen. His extraordinary artistic range as both a visual and performance artist was noticed and duly celebrated. Bernie possessed a unique capacity to inspire and motivate others through his example. He approached life with passion, but always with a generous heart and a kind demeanor. He spent much of his time encouraging and approving youth art projects in the Los Angeles area. He was a special figure to the many people whom he touched during his life. Bernie Casey is survived by his wife, his daughter, and his four grandchildren.
