Williamina “Billie” Burke, widely known as a screen and stage performer, died on May 14,1970 at the age of 85. Born August 7, 1884 in Washington, D.C to John Forrest and Marie Theresa Walther, Burke moved to New York City to pursue a career in theatre and dancing. From 1907 to 1909, she was part of the Ziegfeld Follies and starred in numerous Broadway plays during the 1910s. In 1914, Burke made her debut as a motion picture actress. She rapidly rose to fame and worked with famous actors like Theda Bara and Douglas Fairbanks. Her career spanned over four decades and she appeared in more than fifty films. Burke is well-known for her roles in films such as The Great Ziegfeld (1936), My Little Chickadee (1940) and the classic The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which she played the iconic role of Glinda the Good Witch. In 1923, Burke married actor and theatrical producer Flo Ziegfeld and the two remained happily married until his death in 1932. Together they had one daughter, Patricia Ziegfeld Stephenson. After her husband's death, Burke mostly retired and only accepted a few acting roles. On May 14, 1970, Billie Burke passed away at her home in Los Angeles, California. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
