Boris Shcherbina, a prominent and influential figure in Soviet Russia, passed away on August 22, 1990 at the age of seventy. He is remembered for his governmental service under eight Soviet leaders, including Boris Yeltsin, from whom he received the Order of Merit for his consultation on the privatization of the Russian economy and for chairing a number of crucial committees for the government. Shcherbina made a name for himself in the public sector as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of handling the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. After assuming the position, Shcherbina conducted on-site inspections and rallies to organize a team of responding workers to contain the damage. In 1992, he was awarded the Order of Merit from the Russian Government for his fearless oversight during the crisis. He was praised by the public for his work during the crisis, but also criticized by many due to his loyalty toward the Soviet government. Shcherbina also played a major role in the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the transition to an open economy. After his death, his importance in the Soviet Union’s history was largely recognized. His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched throughout his career as the leader of the Soviet Union and in the people of the nation. Boris Shcherbina’s life will be returned to ashes in the peace of his death.

Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come. Rabindranath Tagore
