Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, a Nobel Prize-winning Indian physicist passed away on November 21, 1970 at the age of 82. Born in Trichinopoly, India on November 7, 1888, Raman was known for his important work in the field of light scattering. Raman's career began with a degree in physics from the Presidency College in Madras, after which he went on to study in England and Germany. Raman returned to India and served as a professor at Presidency College and Calcutta University, consultant to the government, and honorary director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Raman is particularly recognized for his work in light scattering, which led to several research papers late in his career -- including the celebrated work for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. He also published over 60 papers on the theory of sound and other branches of physics, and was awarded several honorary degrees from institutions throughout the world. Raman's work has had a lasting influence on the sciences and he has been recognized for his achievements through the Raman Effect and Raman spectroscopy -- instrumental in fields like astronomy, chemistry and biology. His legacy lives on, continuing to be an inspiration to aspiring physicists.
