Carlos Gracie, a renowned martial artist and teacher, passed away on October 7, 1994, at the age of 92. During his lifetime, Carlos was an accomplished martial artist, teacher, and innovator in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is widely regarded as a pioneer of the sport, establishing the famed Gracie Jiu-Jitsu family and developing one of the most successful martial arts schools. Through his teaching, Carlos inspired generations of martial arts practitioners in Brazil and across the world. In 1925, Carlos opened the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy in Rio de Janeiro and founded a martial arts dynasty. He dedicated his life to the interdisciplinary study of physical, nutritional, and teaching approaches to the sport, which became the standard for modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. Aside from his martial arts career, Carlos was an avid surfer and swimmer who was deeply committed to habit forming and health as an essential component of martial arts training. He wrote several books about his life and martial arts philosophy, and his influence can still be felt today. Carlos's contributions to the martial arts world have left a lasting legacy, and he will be fondly remembered by many.
