On July 16, 2003, Celia Cruz, Queen of Salsa, passed away at the age of 77. A native of Cuba, Celia rose to international stardom in the 1950s with her signature vocal stylings and relentless enthusiasm. Her powerful voice and consummate showmanship made Celia a beloved figure in the Latin music world. Her twenty-first album, La Negra Tiene Tumbao, sold three million copies worldwide and earned her a posthumous Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album. Celia was known for her trademark phrase, "Azucar!", which she shouted at concerts and is widely recognized as her catchphrase. Her career spanned six decades and earned her numerous accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and seven Grammy Awards. Celia embodies the spirit of Latin music and her legacy will live on in the work that she has blessed us with. She will be missed but never forgotten.
