On March 6th, 1954, Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, passed away at the age of 69. He was a notable figure in European politics, serving as a politician throughout his life. Born on July 19th, 1884 in the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, he was the second son of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, and Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont. He was also a great-grandson of Queen Victoria and a first cousin of King George V of the United Kingdom. In his early years, Charles Edward served in the German military and was present during World War I. After the war, he assumed leadership of the duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a position he held until 1918 when Germany became a republic. Throughout his political career, Charles Edward held various positions, including serving as a member of the German parliament and as a member of the Nazi party. He also held the title of State Commissioner of Thuringia from 1933 to 1945. However, his allegiance to the Nazi party during World War II caused controversy and damage to his reputation. Despite this, Charles Edward was known for his passion for sports, particularly horse racing and hunting. He was also a lover of art and culture, and during his lifetime, he amassed an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures. In 1953, Charles Edward was forced to abdicate his position as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha due to the denazification laws imposed by the Allied Powers. He then retreated to his estate in Coburg, where he spent his remaining years. Charles Edward will be remembered for his contributions to European politics and his love for sports and the arts. His passing marks the end of an era and his legacy will live on through his descendants.
