Charlie Chaplin, one of the most prominent and beloved figures in early cinema, has died in his sleep on December 25th, 1977, aged 88. Best remembered for his iconic portrayal of ‘The Little Tramp’ character in the silent era of film, Chaplin was an actor, writer, director, producer, and composer whose impact on the silver screen is incomparable. Chaplin's prolific career span over 75 years. In 1914 he caught the attention of Mack Sennett, of Keystone Pictures, and the rest is history. He went on to star in numerous classic films involving comedic scenarios, including The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), and Modern Times (1936). He won three Academy Awards for his films, as well as an honorary award in 1972. To this day he remains one of the most celebrated actors of all time. In 2009, Time magazine included Chaplin in its 100 most influential people of the 20th century list. Chaplin’s undying legacy of laughter and love will live on in the hearts of his millions of fans around the world.
