Chet Atkins, an iconic and beloved American guitarist, passed away on June 30, 2001 at the age of 77. Atkins was born on June 20, 1924 in Luttrell, Tennessee. Atkins began his professional music career in 1947, and quickly grew to become one of the most influential figures in the country and rock and roll music scenes. He created a style known as "countrypolitan" that combined elements of country, pop, blues, and jazz, and helped to define a critical subgenre of American music. His significant contributions to the music world earned him the nickname "Mr. Guitar." In addition to a highly successful music career, Atkins was also an innovative record producer. He helped launch the careers of numerous artists and produced more than 100 chart toppers. He also wrote columns for several music magazines, and authored several books about guitar playing. Atkins earned three Grammy Awards and was a member 15 Halls of Fame, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His contributions to the music world will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.
