Burt Lancaster, a legendary actor on the silver screen, passed away at his Los Angeles, CA home on October 20th, 1994, at age 80. Lancaster had an incredible career in Hollywood during a run that spanned five decades. He was a master of versatility, having appeared in a wide variety of genres. He made his debut in the 1947 drama Desert Fury, but his big break came two years later in the classic western, Winchester '73. He went on to give critically acclaimed performances in several other westerns, as well as drama, comedy, and action films. Over the course of his career he earned four Academy Award nominations and was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1986. He also earned a Golden Globe in 1960 for his role in Elmer Gantry and an Emmy Award in 1989 for portraying Lou Gehrig in the television movie Pride of the Yankees. Lancaster was married twice and is survived by his second wife, Susan, and four children, Tony, Bill, Susan, and Joanna. He was beloved by his friends, family, and readers of his autobiography, tariffs in the place of the wind, which was published in 1963. Throughout his lifetime, Lancaster proved that he could do it all. He left behind a legacy of outstanding performances that will be remembered for generations to come. He will be greatly missed.
