David Berg, an influential American religious leader, passed away on October 1, 1994 at the age of 75. Berg, born in 1919, was best known as the founder of the religious organization the Children of God, now known as The Family International. Before the founding of his organization, Berg was a Protestant minister in the 1960s. Berg influenced members of his organization through written and oral communication, working them to gather converts to his nontraditional beliefs. His teachings heavily influenced the 1970s motto, “free love” and his ideology around free love has heavily informed the modern thinking of relationships and sex. He authored a book of devotional material called ‘The Mo Letters,’ which presented biblical texts and prophetic revelations to his followers. Berg worked hard to make a unique and lasting mark on the world. He will be remembered as a passionate leader and iconic spiritual leader.
