Don Shirley, 86, has passed away on April 6, 2013 in New York. He was a career civil engineer and urban planner, who dedicated much of his time and energy to improving cities around the world. Don dedicated much of his life to promoting the concept of "sustainable development" and the importance of carefully managing urban areas. He wrote many books and articles which explored the complicated issues involved in urban planning and development. He was especially passionate about improving public transportation. Don had also earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering and teaching at multiple universities, and was a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Engineers, as well as a fellow at the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Don had a long career of public service, being appointed by multiple mayors to draft plans for major urban projects. In his latter years he was fondly known for his iconic contribution to the overhaul of New York City's infrastructure, an initiative that was led by then-mayor, Rudy Giuliani. He will be remembered as a beloved husband, father of three children, grandfather of four, and master bridge player. His perseverance and passion for planning, building, and developing cities lives on. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering, in Don's name.
