Doris Duke (November 22, 1912 - October 28, 1993) was an American heiress and philanthropist. Born toJames Buchanan Duke and Nanaline Holt Inman, she was one of the wealthiest women in the United States and was estimated to be the 11th richest American woman at the time of her death. During her life, she devoted significant personal funds to numerous charitable causes, ranging from supporting international relief organizations to protecting wildlife and promoting the arts. In addition to her generous charitable donations, Duke left an indelible mark on the world by founding institutions to benefit the public. These include the Duke Endowment, which provides grants and scholarships to American schools and colleges, as well as the Duke Farms estate in New Jersey, which is dedicated to protecting wildlife and promoting sustainability. Duke passed away at 80 years old on October 28, 1993, leaving behind a legacy of giving and a world that was made a little better for her many contributions.
