Dorothea Puente, a former Sacramento, California landlady and convicted murderer, died on March 27, 2011 at the age of 82. Puente is most remembered as the mastermind of a deadly scheme in which she ran a rooming house and cashed the Social Security checks of her elderly and mentally disabled tenants while poisoning and burying at least nine of them in her yard. She was arrested in November of 1988, convicted of three counts of murder and sentenced to two life terms in prison in 1993. Puente was born January 9th, 1929 in Redlands, California, but spent most of her life in Sacramento. She married husband Ruben Presson in 1960, but the couple divorced after six years. In her early years, Puente worked as a nurse's aide, owning and operating several assisted living facilities. However, it was through her rooming house scheme that she would eventually become infamous. Puente made headlines again upon her death in 2011, with various news outlets and people remembering her brutal acts. While her victims are greatly missed, her death marks the closure of a horrific chapter in Sacramento's history.
