The sports world is mourning the sudden loss of Dražen Petrović, one of its most promising stars. Born October 22, 1964, in Šibenik, Croatia, Petrović was an extraordinary basketball player, widely known for his long-distance shooting and unselfish play in his short but brilliant NBA career. A highly decorated Serbian basketball player, Petrović rose to international fame after playing in his home country of Croatia, before coming to the United States as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers in 1989. While with the Trail Blazers, he became an All-Star three times and was a two-time recipient of the NBA's Most Improved Player. Petrović's impact on the game quickly spread beyond his accolades, as his signature style of long-distance shooting and team play helped revolutionize the sport. His legendary showmanship also left an impression on his opponents and fans alike. Unfortunately, Petrović's stunning career was cut short on June 7th, 1993, when he passed away in an automobile accident at the age of 28. He is survived by his parents, Bogdan and Marica, along with his older brother Predrag and other extended family members. Petrović's spirit and skill on the court live on through the many basketball fans and fellow players inspired by his impactful legacy.
