American writer, author and literary stylist, Elwyn Brooks "E.B." White, passed away on October 1, 1985. He was 86 years old. White is best remembered for his masterpieces, Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web and The Trumpet of the Swan. His works have withstood the test of time and remain among some of the most beloved children’s books of all time. He also wrote numerous essays for The New Yorker. White’s most notable essay was "Here is New York," which detailed life in New York City during the 1940s. The essay has remained a timeless tribute to the city. In addition to his celebrated literature works, White also coauthored The Elements of Style with William Strunk, Jr. It has been referred to as one of the most influential communication guides of the 20th century. White was lauded for his unique writing style, which was influenced by his love of nature and the American countryside. White was born in Mount Vernon, New York in 1899 and resided in the rural farming community of Maine in his later years. He is survived by his wife, New Yorker writer Katherine Sergeant White, who died in 1977. He is also survived by two sons, Robert M. White and Joel White, and a niece, Josephine White Delafield. White will be fondly remembered by generations of readers, writers, and New Yorkers.
