Edmund Husserl, the father of modern phenomenology, died on April 27, 1938. He was 79 years old. Husserl was born on April 8, 1859 in Prossnitz, Moravia (now Prostějov, Czech Republic). He studied at the Universities of Leipzig, Berlin, and Vienna. He then held professorships at the universities of Halle, Göttingen, and Freiburg. A philosopher, mathematician, and logician, Husserl is best known for his founding of phenomenology and for his advice to treat philosophy as a science. He gained fame for his three-volume work Logical Investigations (1900-01). He was also the author of works on the foundations of mathematics including Philosophy of Arithmetic (1891). Husserl died at his home in Freiburg and will be remembered for his groundbreaking work on phenomenology.
