On September 28th, 1953 the world mourned the loss of Edwin Hubble, a renowned astronomer and scientist. Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri in 1889 and studied at the University of Chicago, graduating with a degree in Astronomy and Mathematics. Throughout his prolific career, Hubble made groundbreaking observations of the cosmos and furthered our understanding of our universe. He put forth the groundbreaking notion that there were other galaxies beyond our own Milky Way and, by measuring the red shift of galaxies, he was able to calculate that they were moving away from our own, leading to the support of the Big Bang Theory. Hubble also discovered hundreds of galaxies and nebulae, and in 1936 he published his article The Realm of the Nebulae, which helped change our understanding and classification of galaxies. In 1953 he was awarded the Bruce Medal, the highest honour given for astronomy in the US. Having helped reshape our perception of the universe, Hubble will be remembered and celebrated by future generations and will always be remembered as a pioneering figure in the field of astronomy.
