Emmeline Pankhurst, women's rights activist and founder of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), died on 14th June 1928 at the age of 69. She was born in Manchester in 1858, the daughter of political activists, and was a part of the movement for women's suffrage from the early 1890s. Pankhurst and the WSPU became known for their willingness to use militant tactics such as hunger strikes, heckling politicians, and chaining themselves to railings in order to bring attention to their cause. Their activism eventually resulted in the Representation of the People Act 1918, which gave women the right to vote in the United Kingdom. Pankhurst's work also extended beyond politics; she suffered openly for her activism, was a prominent Christian suffragist, and involved in causes such as animal rights and socialism. She held numerous public offices, including Vice-President of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, Vice-President of the International Alliance of Suffragists, and founder of the Women's Freedom League. Pankhurst will be remembered for her significant achievements and tireless activism on behalf of women.
