Enver Pasha, a leading figure in the nationalist movement of Turkey, passed away on August 4, 1922 at the age of 40. He was born Ahmed Enver Bey in Shumen, Bulgaria on November 22, 1881. After studying at the military college of Monastir, Enver began his military career in the Ottoman Empire and rose to prominence during the Young Turk Revolution of 1908. Throughout his career Enver held various positions within the government, including Minister of War and Minister of the Marine, Commander in Chief, and Deputy General-in-Chief of the Ottoman Armed Forces. He worked with formative Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and played a significant role in the cause for Georgian independence and the formative years of the Republic of Turkey. Enver Pasha is often remembered for his courage and strong sense of national purpose during a crucial time in the region’s history. He leaves behind a legacy of a determined leader who was devoted to his country and its expansive cause. He will be remembered fondly by many.
