It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Frederik Willem de Klerk (1936-2021), a prominent statesman who served as President of South Africa from 1989 to 1994. De Klerk excels in the pursuit of a more just society. He was the architect of the country's successful transition from apartheid to democratic rule, an era marked by courage, optimism and dignity. He played a pivotal role in this transition: negotiating with the African National Congress, jailing Nelson Mandela, and ultimately initiating the repeal of apartheid laws. His courage and tenacity earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, shared with Nelson Mandela, for his efforts to peacefully bring an end to apartheid. In addition to his political career, de Klerk also wrote an autobiography, 'The Last Trek - A New Beginning', and spoke of his commitment to his faith, human rights and democracy. De Klerk passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 85. He will be remembered for his selfless devotion to his country, his dedication to democracy and his remarkable courage in the face of adversity. He leaves behind a legacy and nation of freedom and opportunity. May he rest in peace.
