Fred Astaire, an American dancer, singer, actor, and choreographer, passed away on June 22, 1987, in Los Angeles at the age of 88. Over the course of an impressive seven decade long career, Astaire’s work earned him many accolades, including an Honorary Oscar and many Golden Globe and Emmy Awards, as well as induction into the National Museum of Dance. In addition to his numerous contributions to the entertainment industry, Astaire was also well-known for being an avid golfer, hitting his first hole-in-one when he was seventy-three. Astaire was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 10, 1899, and would later join his older sister, Adele, in vaudeville. The siblings would go on to perform on Broadway and in the first nine of the twelve films they made together while signed to RKO from 1933-1935. Throughout his career, Astaire was remarkably active and prolific. He appeared in over thirty films and many television specials, also releasing over ten albums. An extensively trained dancer, he was known for his sheer joy in the physical agility and movement found in his performances. Astaire will be remembered for his great accomplishments and contribution to popular culture, and of course for his incomparable trademark dance style.
