Friedrich Paulus (1890-1957) died on February 1, 1957, at the age of 66. Paulus was a German military officer who rose through the ranks to become a field marshal, the highest rank in the German Army. During World War II, Paulus was based in Stalingrad and was the commanding General of the 6th Army. In 1943, Paulus and his forces were surrounded by the Red Army and Paulus eventually had to accept Russian terms of surrender. Paulus lived in Soviet captivity until 1953, when he emigrated to West Germany. He spent his remaining years in East German custody and refused to endorse communism or participate in propaganda. Paulus's date of death has been recorded as February 1, 1957.
