Gary Carter, an 11-time All-Star catcher and an inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame, passed away on February 16, 2012, at the age of 57. Carter began his career in 1974 playing for the Montreal Expos. In his 19 seasons playing Major League Baseball, he was a key component of five postseason teams, held various batting and coaching records, and was an important part of the 1986 World Series-winning New York Mets. He earned numerous awards over his career, including three Gold Glove Awards and two Silver Slugger Awards, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2003. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Carter was actively involved in charity work across the United States and Canada. He took particular joy in working with youth sports organizations, from which he drew his own love for the game of baseball. Carter is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sandy, and his four children Christina, Kimmy, Christy, and D.J.
