Gauri Lankesh, journalist and activist, passed away on 5 September 2017 at the age of 55. Gauri was one of India's most prominent journalists, and among its most courageous. A beloved daughter of former Editor in Chief of the Lankesh Publications, P. Lankesh, she was an influential writer and editor in English and Kannada. She founded and edited her own weekly newspaper, Gauri Lankesh Patrike, and wrote regularly for a variety of publications. Gauri was a champion of justice. She incessantly called for secular ideals and diversity. Whether speaking out against creeping extremism or taking a stand against the unfair distribution of depressed classes, Gauri had a vehement heart for social justice that was reflected in her work. Gauri was an estranged voice of the voiceless. She had been threatened continuously, and she courageously stood up for what she believed in with only her boldness and sharp pen to protect her. Gauri is survived by her family, friends, and admirers. She will be deeply missed.
