We mourn the sudden death of Glenn Herbert Gould, world-renowned pianist, teacher and composer. He passed away peacefully on October 4, 1982, at the young age of 50. A native of Toronto, Canada, Gould made his professional debut at the age of 13 and rose to international fame in 1955 with his first album, performing the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. He continued to make recordings and hold concert tours for almost 3 decades. A craftsman in his genre, Gould's renditions of modern, as well as classical, repertoire captivated, frustrated and inspired listeners worldwide. His extraordinary technical abilities and passionate artistry earned him a permanent place among the greatest piano musicians of the 20th century. In addition to his musical achievements, Gould was an essayist, author and broadcaster. His written work can be found in various publications, including The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and Canadian Music Journal. Gould is survived by his loving family in Toronto. He will be remembered for eternity for his ecological footprints and contribution to the music and arts community.
