Norman Rockwell (February 3, 1894 - November 8, 1978) was an American artist whose illustrations appeared in books, magazines, newspapers and countless homes across the country. He drew on everyday life as themes for his art, creating iconic depictions of Americana such as the painting of a small-town couple under the four freedoms outlined by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. After studying at the National Academy of Design, Rockwell painted over 4,000 canvases in his lifetime. His artwork graced the covers of magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post and The New Yorker. His paintings are now collected and exhibited in museums all around the world. With his commitment to everyday narrative and his vivid use of color, Rockwell created some of the world’s most popular and enduringly iconic images. He passed away at the age of 84 on November 8, 1978. He will be remembered for his contagious optimism, sincere sentimentality, and Americana style and indelible impact on illustration and art history.
