Harilal Gandhi, a beloved son of Mahatma Gandhi and famous Indian political and spiritual leader, passed away on June 18th, 1948 at the age of 59. Born in India in 1889, Harilal Gandhi was a talented and dedicated student, graduating from local schools before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Samaldas College in Bhavnagar. Afterward, he continued his education abroad in England, graduating with a law degree from University College London in 1915. Harilal Gandhi later returned to India and immersed himself in politics. He joined his father’s movement against British rule and was devoted to the non-violent activist movement. Harilal Gandhi left an indelible legacy in India. He fought for independence through every means available to him. He was respected by people all over India, as well as many socialist leaders internationally. We will all remember and cherish the bold spirit, political activism, and unparalleled dedication to non-violent resistance that was embodied in Harilal Gandhi. His life was one filled with great love, hope, and encouragement, and his passing is a great loss felt throughout India and the world.
