Harold Shipman (1946 – 2004) passed away on 2004-01-13 at the age of 57. He was a family doctor in Hyde, Greater Manchester, and an army surgeon from 1975 until he was dismissed from the army in 1976. In 1999, he was convicted for 15 counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was found guilty of 15 additional murders in 2000 and in total, may have been responsible for as many as 218 deaths, although this is unconfirmed. In a statement inciting his conviction, the trial judge stated that "there was not the slightest doubt that you are a very wicked man, indeed, and that in your case life imprisonment is the only proper sentence." notes There is no mention of the funeral or services.

Those men who, in war, seek to preserve their lives at any rate commonly die with shame and ignominy, while those who look upon death as common to all, and unavoidable, and are only solicitous to die with honour, oftener arrive at old age and, while they live, live happier. Xenophon
