The world of acting lost one of its brightest stars on December 19, 2003 when Hope Lange passed away in Los Angeles, California at the age of 70. Born in Redding, Connecticut on November 28, 1933, Hope, nee Marie Huot Lange, began acting at the age of 17 when she made her Broadway debut in The Prescott Proposals. After a few years she made the leap to Hollywood, quickly establishing herself as a successful and reliable actress. Her sole Academy Award nomination came for her role in the 1958 classic Peyton Place, where her performance as Selena Cross earned her Hollywood immortality. In her long career, Lange established an impressive list of movie and television credits, most notably her iconic performance as Matilda Hanson in 1978's The Megan Tyler Story. In addition to her numerous acting roles, Lange was also an accomplished and dedicated philanthropist, donating her time, energy, and money to many environmental causes. Hope Lange will be remembered and honored by her peers and fans for her immense talent and activism. She leaves behind her husband, Charles Hollerith, three children, and a host of admirers.
