Internationally renowned architect Ieoh Ming Pei, FAIA, RIBA, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2019, in the city he made home of New York aged 102. Born on April 26, 1917, in Guangzhou, China, Pei grew up in a wealthy banking family and studied architecture in Shanghai and the United States, at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he gained his masters degree in 1946. During a career spanning decades, perhaps his most renowned works included iconic buildings in the US such as the John F Kennedy Library in Massachusetts, the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and the collapsible metal pyramid roof of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Amongst a portfolio of international projects, Pei helped to transform several of the world’s major cities, including New York, Chicago, Houston and Dallas, to name a few. The man behind the glass pyramids and skylines, Pei’s distincive style drew upon the modernist masters such as Le Corbusier and Mies Van Der Rohe and his success won him numerous awards and honorary degrees during his lifetime. Illustrious architect and artist alike, Pei worked tirelessly until his death, continuing to take on new projects and inspire students, colleagues and the public. He was predeceased by his wife in 2014. He is survived by his three sons.
