Ida Lupino, an iconic actress and director in the filmmaking industry, passed away on August 3, 1995, at age 77. Born on February 4, 1918, Lupino was born into an entertainment family of actors, dancers and singers. She began her acting career in 1933, appearing in a variety of films in the 1930s and 40s; her most recognized roles include They Drive By Night (1940), High Sierra (1941), The Hard Way (1943), and Not Wanted (1949). In 1949, Lupino made history by becoming the first female filmmaker ever to direct a movie. Her string of successful noir films — including Outrage (1950), The Hitch-Hiker (1953), and The Bigamist (1953) — established her as one of the most influential female filmmakers during the time. In addition to film, Lupino also landed roles in several television series such as Mr. Adams and Eve (1957-1958) and The Twilight Zone (1959-1960). Lupino was highly recognized for her achievement in film and the entertainment business by her peers, receiving countless awards throughout her career. She was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy for The Hard Way (1943) and received an Academy Honorary Award in 1970 for her "contributions to the art of film direction."
