Irena Sendler (1910-2008), a woman widely considered to be one of the most revered humanitarians of the 20th century, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2008. She was 98 years old. Sendler's legacy is one of groundbreaking bravery and determination during the Holocaust, where she became a symbol of hope and salvation to thousands of Jews at the time. Working with the underground resistance in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, Sendler developed a network that smuggled infants and children out of the ghetto and provided them with false documents and new identities. Sendler was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 but refused to reveal the identities of any of those saved by her, thus protecting them from almost certain death. She remained committed to her cause, even in the face of public and personal tribulations, and ultimately succeeded in saving 2500 individuals in total. Her memory will live on as a tireless humanitarian and symbol of courage who was capable of seeing beyond the bleakness of the darkest times. She selflessly sacrificed her own safety for the well-being of others, and her name will not be forgotten.
