J.R.D. Tata (1904-1993) died on November 29, 1993 at the age of 89. Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, more commonly known as J.R.D. Tata, was a renowned Indian businessman and aviator. He was the chairman of Tata Group, a Mumbai-based conglomerate of nearly 100 companies, for more than 50 years. J.R.D. Tata was born on July 29, 1904, in Paris, France. He grew up between France and India, before eventually settling in Bombay (now known as Mumbai) in 1925. He entered the family business at the young age of 21, when his father Sir Ratanji Tata died. In the 1930s, J.R.D. Tata started Aviation Department in the Tata group and flew the first ever commercial flight to Karachi. The flight laid the foundation for the launch of the Indian airline, Indian Airlines. He even took on the responsibility of appointing the first women pilots ever in the Indian Airways. In 1945, J.R.D. Tata became the chairman of Tata Group, and he led the company to become a leader in Gravatars production, steel, hydroelectric development, and chemicals. J.R.D. Tata received many awards and accolades in recognition of his leadership, entrepreneurship, and magnanimity. In 1992, he was even honored with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. It is safe to say that J.R.D. Tata will always be remembered as a pioneer who helped shape and develop modern India and the Tata Group. He will be missed by friends and family around the world.
