Jack Johnson, a legendary American heavyweight boxer who reigned as the World Heavyweight Champion between 1908-1915, passed away on June 10th, 1946 at the age of 68. He was born on March 31, 1878 in Galveston, Texas. Johnson made history by becoming the first African-American World Heavyweight Champion, during a time of heavy racism in America. He was known for his athleticism and intelligence in the boxing ring, often using strategy to outsmart his opponents. Johnson was successful in 38 out of 54 professional bouts, including 27 knockouts. He won the World Heavyweight Championship title in 1908 and successfully defended his title 19 times, the longest streak for a heavyweight champion in history at that time. He retired from boxing in 1914 but continued to be vocal in a variety of social causes until his death. Jack Johnson will always remain a cultural icon, an inspiration and a role model to countless people all around the world. He will be remembered for his legacy in boxing, civil rights, and for becoming the first African-American World Heavyweight Champion.
