Jagjit Singh, renowned Indian Ghazal singer, composer and musician, passed away at the age of 70 on October 10th, 2011. Born in a small village in Rajastan on March 8, 1941, Jagjit began to learn vocal music and classical singing under the tutelage of Pandit Chaganlal Sharma at the age of 14. In 1964, he moved to Mumbai in pursuit of his dream to become a professional singer. Jagjit's signature vocal style was unmistakable, showcasing a beautiful blend of the classical traditions and modern sensibility. He found immense success and the love of millions of fans with evergreen hits like 'Hothon Se Chhoo Lo Tum', 'Tum Itna Jo Muskura', 'Jalte Hain Jiske Liye', 'Aap Ko Dekh Kar Jeeta' and 'Koi Fariyaad'. Jagjit also experimented with popular Bollywood music, lending his voice to tracks in movies like 'Prem Geet', 'Arth', 'Saath Saath' and 'Prem Pal' and making his mark in the western world with 'Silent Moments', an album that topped the Billboard World Music chart in 1991. Jagjit's passion to create music spread across several genres, including bhajans, sufi and regional music. Rendering his own compositions, sketching immaculate nuances of classical music and merging it in a commercially viable way, he made a lasting impression in the hearts of his fans. His music will live on forever and be remembered for generations to come.
