Jean Arthur, a beloved actress known for her roles in classic comedies and dramas, passed away on June 19, 1991, at the age of 90. Born on October 17, 1900 in upstate New York to a Baptist family, Jean began working as an actress on Broadway after dropping out of college, making her Broadway debut in 1918. In 1933, she made the transition to Hollywood, later earning an Oscar nomination in 1940 for her performance in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” opposite Jimmy Stewart. Her other notable film roles included appearances in “The Whole Town’s Talking” and “You Can’t Take it with You”, which she shared with Lionel Barrymore. Jean was celebrated for her comedic timing and dynamic on-screen presence and garnered countless lifelong fans throughout her career. Though Jean was a legendary film star in her day, towards the end of her life, she chose to remain out of the public eye and instead focus her time and energy on her beloved animals. Jean is survived by her friends and devoted admirers. We will all miss her dearly.
