On October 11th 1963, renowned poet, playwright, and filmmaker Jean Cocteau passed away. He was 74 years old. A renowned creative artist, Cocteau was acclaimed for his works including his classic 1930s film “Orphee”, the opera “La Machine Infernale” and an adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast". He was known for his surrealistic style of writing in both his plays and novels. Coted for his contribution to the art of the twentieth century, his works and peers significantly influenced the avant-garde artistic movement. Cocteau amassed a sizable collection of awards throughout his career, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, an honorary Academy Award, and an Award from the Cannes Film Festival. In May 1963, he was also made a Commandeur of the National Order of Merit. He was beloved by colleagues and audiences alike for his witty reflections and observations. Jean Cocteau’s impact on the world of art will forever be missed.
